*Kylar's POV*
“We can’t thank you enough Kylar. You’ve been such a big help since Fall got hospitalized.” Mrs. Amour thanked me as I walked through the front doors of the hospital. Glancing at the old metal clock in the center, above the check-in desk, reading four o'clock in the afternoon. Fall should be finishing her last rehab session.
“Don’t worry about a thing Mrs. Amour. I’d never let anything happen to Fall.” A sigh of relief came from Mrs. Amour as the sentence echoed through the phone. After thanking me, we both hung up and I shoved my phone back into my pocket. Looking up, I noticed a yellow shine through the skylight. Focusing harder and trying to get a better look, it started to form a halo and began to vibrate harshly.
“Fall..” I ran towards the stairs, flinging the door open. No, not now, this can’t happen. Not after everything I did. I took so many precautions. Skipping steps on the staircase and running as fast as I could, I bolted through the door to the fourth floor and sprinted down the narrow hallways to the end. Ripping the glass door open, everyone in the rehab room jumped, startled by my sudden entrance.
“Woah! Did you miss me that much!?” Fall’s voice echoed in my ears as I frantically looked around the room. Soon I calmed down as I realized it was safe. Now turning my gaze to Fall, she was smiling sweetly. The nurse helped Fall walk over to me, making sure she was still stable enough and wouldn't topple over. Grabbing her hands, I placed my other hand on the small of her back to help stabilize her more.
“You should be fine, Fall. Aside from the few side effects and occasionally getting dizzy, you should be able to do almost everything on your own. Just make sure that if you do start to get dizzy or have blurred vision, you sit down until the feeling dissipates. The doctor gave the nurse’s desk your medication, so when you’re ready to leave, it’ll be ready for you.” The nurse gave Fall the details, and she nodded happily. He then left to check on the other patients in the room.
Escorting Fall out of the room, we walked back to her hospital room to pack up her belongings. “Thanks for being here. Sorry, my parents pester you to help me out. It’s only because they’re so busy.” Fall apologized on behalf of her parents, but it certainly wasn’t needed. I needed to protect her, and the sooner we can get out of the hospital… the better.
I was still suspicious and looking around the halls cautiously as we walked to the nurses' desk. It was a risk having Fall at the same hospital for so long, especially with the government angels trailing us at all times. Even if I had used all the wards I could, they’d still manage to find us if we stayed in one place for too long.
“Hey, wanna grab some lunch?” Fall’s voice pulled me from my thoughts, and I nodded. Entering the elevator, I tried to keep my mind off the halo-shaped glow from earlier. It could’ve just been an angel guarding their human. Hospitals are familiar places to find angels, but half the time, they aren’t in their human form, so it’s hard to spot them.
The elevator doors closed and just as they snapped together, I saw a figure with wings and a halo in the reflection. My heart skipped a beat, and I quickly turned around, but no one was there.
“Are you okay? You seem a little jumpy today.” Fall grabbed my arm and looked at me with concern in her eyes. Nodding slowly with a smile, my heart wouldn’t stop racing. The sooner we were out of here, the better.
I brought the car around and put Fall’s bags in the trunk. Opening her door, she climbed in and buckled. Closing the door and taking one last glance around, I raced to the driver's side and got in.
“You know… I had the craziest dream last night.” She seemed relaxed now, seeing as she was willing to tell a story. Pulling out of the hospital parking lot, she continued, “First, I was with a man, but he felt familiar and safe. Next thing you know, I was on the ground dying, but there were sounds of war ringing in my ears.” Strange dream for someone who’s never been in a war.
“So then what happened?” I turned the wheel slightly, before glancing over at her. She paused and seemed confused for a moment. The silence almost felt deadly. Then she sighed and looked sad.
“The weirdest thing happened after that. The man from before, he picked me up, and when I managed to open my eyes, he had wings. They were gorgeous! Beautiful and white with gold pulsing on the bones of them. They seemed strong… yet gentle.” At her words, I slammed on the brakes, and we both jerked forward.
Reaching over, I helped Fall straighten up. My heart was racing a mile a minute and I was at a loss for words. That wasn’t a dream...at least at one point in time, it wasn’t. I erased those memories...so how…? “A… Are...you...okay?” The words were seemingly hard to get out as my brain scrambled for an answer. If she had that dream, it was only a matter of time until she found out it wasn’t a dream...and they..they would find us… and kill us both.
